Looking For A Snack

There were about two dozen hummingbirds around a feeder.  They didn’t seem to mind me being close so I set up a Day Lily potted plant about three feet from the feeder.  After setting up my camera I rotated the plant until I liked what I was seeing in the view finder.  I looked at the background and knew it was far enough away to give a pleasant blur.  It wasn’t long before several started checking out the flower giving me several different captures.  They are always fun to watch.

Ruby-Throated Hummingbird

While visiting my mother in-law in early May I notice some hummingbirds gathering by the feeders.  I figured they were migrating through and I didn’t want to pass up the opportunity of photographing one.  Since this was more of a family gathering I didn’t bring my usual equipment.  I got pretty close to the hummers and just waited and watched them come and go.  I tried as I might but is wasn’t easy holding the D4 and 70-200 for long periods of time hoping one would come into my focal plane.  I took a large number of shots but will only keep this one.  I know they will be back in September so I’ll be ready.

Hummingbird – Resting

These are a couple of past hummingbird photo’s I like.  While visiting my in-laws one time the hummingbirds were passing through on their migration.  They always seem to hang around at least a couple of weeks with a few staying longer.

I took so many pictures it seemed like my camera was telling me to slowdown and enjoy.  So that’s what I did for a couple of days.  I would get up early in the morning and just sit on the porch watching them come and go as they chattered back and forth.  I noticed one of the branches where they perched was going to be a good spot as the sun starting up.  I set up my camera where I could get some of the blue sky in the background.  I used some fill flash to try to get some of the shadows but not over power.

I have to thank my mother in-law for making up the special solution.  It was my job to keep the feeders filled as they buzzed around me with in inches.
